Simla, the 16th May 1894.

We have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of Lord Kimber- ley's Despatch No. 15 (Public), dated the 15th February last, requesting to be informed whether any, and, if so, what special regulations are in force in Burma with regard to brothels; and also whether the oppression of the inmates of brothels which is complained of at Hong-Kong and Singapore is found to exist in Burma, and, if so, how it is dealt with.

2. In reply we beg to forward a copy of a letter* from the Chief Commissioner of Burma, with enclo- sures, from which it will be seen that there is no special law in Burma relating to brothels. The further reports referred to in paragraph 5 of the Chief Commis- sioner's letter will be forwarded to you as soon as they are received.
